Transgender and Employment: Legal & Ethical Considerations Involved in Vocational Counseling

Training type: Community Based Training
Training topic: Education
Date and time: Thu, 12/10/2020 - 2:00pm to 4:00pm
Location: Online - Link to be provided upon paid registration
Description:

According to the Williams Institute, an estimated 1.4 million adults identify as transgender in the United States. Employers across the country have grown increasingly aware of the importance of creating welcoming workplaces for transgender and gender non-conforming individuals and their families. However, recent research indicates that more than one in four transgender individuals have lost a job due to bias, and more than three-fourths have experienced some form of workplace discrimination. Refusal to hire, privacy violations, harassment and even physical and sexual violence on the job are common occurrences.

Join us as training participants explore the critical concerns involved in counseling transgender and gender non-conforming clients in the employment process. The following areas will be thoughtfully explored and discussed:

  • Counseling considerations regarding disclosure of one’s identity to a potential employer, before, during or after a job interview, or not at all
  • Transgender workplace rights and responsibilities: Ethical and legal considerations for the employer and employee
  • Best practices in navigating gender identity and gender expression in “gendered” spaces and more…..
