Promoting self-determination and self-advocacy has been recognized as best practice in the education of students with disabilities since the early 1990s, when the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) mandated increased student involvement in transition planning. This training will define self-determination and self-advocacy and provide training participants with resources, tools and activities that provide opportunities for students to practice, develop and strengthen self-determination skills which in turn leads to greater independence and self-advocacy.
